12 Killed at Dark Knight Rises Premiere in Aurora Colorado – James Holmes in Custody

It was a dark night indeed for those who were attending a screening of the new Batman film ‘Dark Knight Rises’ as a lone gunman, now identified by authorities as 24 year old James Holmes, wreaked havoc on the Century 16 Cinema in Aurora, Colorado killing 12 people and injuring scores more. Film-goers were in for a shock as the suspect James Holmes entered the theater, heavily armed and intent on harm. After throwing what some are reporting to be tear gas, the suspect Holmes proceeded to shoot into the heavily crowded area.

The screening, which started shortly after midnight, was a highly anticipated event. Some in attendance reported seeing the gas, but thinking it was some sort of effect having to do with the movie. The realization that it was not was soon apparent as the shooter, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, a shotgun and two handguns began firing. People were torn between staying in place and running to safety. Bodies were in the aisles, bloodied and badly injured, as those able to make it out quickly ran past them. Initial reports counted as many as 15 killed, but it is currently believed that 12 people were killed and 50 more injured.

As reports made their way to the airwaves, friends, family and concerned citizens began to crowd area hospitals awaiting word on their loved ones. Shock and dismay are obvious in the faces of those captured by news cameras reporting this event. What should have been an enjoyable outing quickly became an act of horror, one Governor John Hickenlooper is calling an act of depravity.

The suspect, James Holmes, was reported to have been wearing a gas mask at the time of the attack. After this unimaginable act of violence was carried out, Holmes is reported to have surrendered and was promptly taken into custody without incident. There are no confirmed reports of a motive at this time. An FBI spokesperson has reported that this gunman acted alone and there is no indication that a second person was present or involved. Over 100 FBI agents are involved in the investigation in Aurora – at the movie theater, as well as Holmes’ apartment. Authorities are now looking into how the suspect acquired the weapons. The building in which the gunman lived and those surrounding it were evacuated in attempts by ATF agents to make sure it did not pose a danger and was not booby-trapped.

Words of compassion were not only received from the governor, but also from President Barack Obama. He stated his sincere sympathy to those involved and issued a plea to the American people to come together during this devastating time.

FBI Opens Investigation in News Corp

“News Corporation is under investigation by the FBI in New York, due to allegations that journalists tried to obtain the phone records of 9/11 victims.

The inquiry was opened after FBI director Robert Mueller received a letter from Representative Peter King, Rep-NY, demanding an immediate investigation into journalists who worked for The News of the World, a UK tabloid owned by News Corporation. News reports have surfaced that the journalists used bribery and unauthorized wiretapping to attempt to access the phone records of victims of 9/11.

“”We’re aware of certain allegations pertaining to a possible hacking by News Corp, personnel and we’re looking into these charges,”" said Jim Margolin, a spokesman for the New York office of the FBI.

The News of the World is currently under criminal investigation in Britain for hacking the phones of a multitude of people, including the voice mail of 13 year old Milly Dowler, who was kidnapped and murdered in 2002. There are also accusations of bribing police for stories. A number of journalists have been arrested, The News of the World has closed its doors after 168 years in business, and Rupert Murdoch has withdrawn his attempt to take over British Sky Broadcasting.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal (which is owned by News Corp), Murdoch defended his company, saying that they are handling the phone-hacking scandal “”extremely well in every possible way”" with only “”minor mistakes”". He said that an independent committee, led by a “”distinguished non-employee”" would investigate the allegations.

In an article in Monday’s Daily Mirror, a rival tabloid in the UK, it was reported that journalists from The News of the World has been in contact with a New York private investigator and former police officer, offering him money in exchange for 9/11 victims’ phone numbers, and details of any calls made in the days prior to the attacks.

Rep. King wrote “”If these allegations are proven true, the conduct would merit felony charges for attempting to violate various federal statutes related to corruption of public officials and prohibitions against wiretapping. Any person found guilty of this purported conduct should receive the harshest sanctions available under the law.”"

Along with Rep. King, a number of Democratic lawmakers have spoken out, including Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia, and New Jersey Senators Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg.

Murdoch and his son James are scheduled to testify before the UK Parliament next week. Rebekah Brooks, CEO of News International before her sudden resignation today, will also testify.

Details of the inquiry have yet to be disclosed, including those under investigation and specific criminal acts. At this point the FBI is treating the case as an assessment, a step that is taken before possibly issuing subpoenas. It is thought that the inquiry will be overseen by two FBI departments, one focussing on white-collar crime and public corruption, and the other investigating cybercrime.

Relatives of 9/11 victims have spoken out, thankful that the FBI is looking into the matter.

Sally Regenhard, who lost her son, firefighter Christian in the attacks, said: “”I’m very happy. The FBI is being very responsive in acting on our call for a full investigation.”"

New York firefighter Jim McCaffrey, whose brother-in-law Orio Palmer, also a firefighter, died on 9/11, said: “”If these claims are found to be true I think it’ a terrible revelation and very, very upsetting to 9/11 family members.”"

If the FBI investigation determines that the allegations are indeed true, it may prove difficult to move forward with the investigation. A former lawyer for the FBI has noted that there is a five-year statute of limitations when it comes to prosecuting people accused of wiretapping.”

FBI Hacked by Anonymous

One of the FBI’s private contractors, IRC Federal, was compromised by a cyber-attack last Friday. The hackers, who call themselves AntiSec gained access to IRC Federal’s servers and, in their own words, œlaid nuclear waste to their systems.Later, they released a portion of the collected data on the popular bittorent site, Pirate Bay. Even though their message was littered with anti-American rhetoric and accused IRC Federal of selling out to the “US Empire,AntiSec later asked for understanding, saying that, we are not your enemy, but your citizens.Unfortunately, this is not the first time an FBI affiliate has been hacked, some might remember the recent attack on InfraGard.

FBI to Target Undocumented Aliens

“The FBI has been identified as a key player in a covert operation to identify undocumented immigrants. In documents obtained from the Obama Administration, the program known as Secure Communities seeks to identify illegal immigrants in American jails across the country. The documents reveal that the program is only a small part of a broader inter-agency operation that obtains personal records of not only incarcerated foreign citizens but incarcerated US citizens.

FBI to Target Undocumented Aliens

Secure Communities is ran through an agency of the Department of Homeland Security and its base of operations is in Florida. The basic premise of the program is to run arrested individuals through a screening process that includes fingerprinting. Law enforcement will run the fingerprints through a Department of Homeland Security Database, if the person has previously been fingerprinted by Immigration than the Immigration and Customs Enforcement requires that they detain the inmate until ICE officials can arrive to question them and ultimately decide what to do with them. The process is only helpful in identifying individuals who have already been classified as illegally in the US but law enforcement officials still hail the program as a step in the right direction. One important problem that the Secure Communities program has overcome is racial profiling.

“”It doesn’t look at the color of your skin,”" Deputy Scott Hassell of Etowa County said in an interview with the Gadsen Times. “”It looks at clear objective data.”"

Regardless of that positive aspect, the program has come under fire recently with the realization of how vast the network is and how easily the information obtained could be used against US citizens. Many states are balking at the idea of instituting it. So far three states: Massachusetts, Illinois, and New York have outright refused to obey the Obama Administrations initiative. They claim that the program is not carrying out its originally stated mission which was to detain the most dangerous criminals. According to the Denver Post two-thirds of the twenty one people detained in Colorado through Secure Communities were not dangerous criminals.

With the documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act that uncovered the FBI’s integral role in the program, the main concern is that the massive data collection will eventually be used for other programs within the Department of Homeland Security. Programs that will threaten the rights of legal citizens and residents of the US.”

Authorities of the El Paso International Airport have taken the matter very seriously and have ordered for an investigation.

The airport authorities didn’t give any information regarding the FBI agent’s name and other details. Airport authorities cited the current investigation process as the reason for not disclosing the FBI agent details, which is being handled by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).”

Getting a job with the FBI is a considered prestigious and it is a dream of many young Americans to work with the Bureau.  Beside the excitement of apprehending criminals, the job also helps to perform a public service by saving the lives of many people. There is also a lot of analysis, planning and problem solving that exercises the grey cells. It has a perfect mix of brain and brawn which is what makes it a popular choice for thousands of aspirants. However, not everyone may be cut out for a position with the Bureau.

One of the first criteria that a person has to meet for getting a job with the FBI is that he has to be a U.S. citizen who is between the age of 23 and 46. In addition, he or she must have at least a four year degree from an accredited university or college along with a minimum of three years work experience as a professional. The areas where the person’s specialization could help him qualify for entry to the Bureau are accounting, languages, law, computers and information technology or certain other diverse fields.

In addition to this, the person should also meet certain other requirements for a job with the FBI such as having a valid driver’s license, no previous convictions for a felony, no violation of the drug policy outlined by the Bureau, and no default on student loans received from the Federal Government. The person also has to pass a drug test, and meet the physical fitness requirements laid down in the guidelines. An additional requirement is that the person should be available to work in any part of the world as and when the situation demands it.

Once a person meets these criteria, he or she can then make a formal application through the FBI website. If selected from amongst the thousands of applicants, there are two more stages to be completed before the person gets the job. The first is a thorough background investigation before a clearance is given. This is in view of the sensitive and classified nature of the information that the person will have access to. The second is 21 week training program that pushes the mental and physical abilities of the person to the limit. If they successfully complete the program, they qualify for a job as an agent. If they do not qualify, then there is still the option of applying for support jobs with the Bureau at locations throughout the country.
