While the identities of the suspects have not been officially confirmed, it is being reported by the Associated Press as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev.  The second suspect is being widely reported to be Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who wrote on his website:  ”I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them.”

12 Killed at Dark Knight Rises Premiere in Aurora Colorado – James Holmes in Custody

It was a dark night indeed for those who were attending a screening of the new Batman film ‘Dark Knight Rises’ as a lone gunman, now identified by authorities as 24 year old James Holmes, wreaked havoc on the Century 16 Cinema in Aurora, Colorado killing 12 people and injuring scores more. Film-goers were in for a shock as the suspect James Holmes entered the theater, heavily armed and intent on harm. After throwing what some are reporting to be tear gas, the suspect Holmes proceeded to shoot into the heavily crowded area.

The screening, which started shortly after midnight, was a highly anticipated event. Some in attendance reported seeing the gas, but thinking it was some sort of effect having to do with the movie. The realization that it was not was soon apparent as the shooter, armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, a shotgun and two handguns began firing. People were torn between staying in place and running to safety. Bodies were in the aisles, bloodied and badly injured, as those able to make it out quickly ran past them. Initial reports counted as many as 15 killed, but it is currently believed that 12 people were killed and 50 more injured.

As reports made their way to the airwaves, friends, family and concerned citizens began to crowd area hospitals awaiting word on their loved ones. Shock and dismay are obvious in the faces of those captured by news cameras reporting this event. What should have been an enjoyable outing quickly became an act of horror, one Governor John Hickenlooper is calling an act of depravity.

The suspect, James Holmes, was reported to have been wearing a gas mask at the time of the attack. After this unimaginable act of violence was carried out, Holmes is reported to have surrendered and was promptly taken into custody without incident. There are no confirmed reports of a motive at this time. An FBI spokesperson has reported that this gunman acted alone and there is no indication that a second person was present or involved. Over 100 FBI agents are involved in the investigation in Aurora – at the movie theater, as well as Holmes’ apartment. Authorities are now looking into how the suspect acquired the weapons. The building in which the gunman lived and those surrounding it were evacuated in attempts by ATF agents to make sure it did not pose a danger and was not booby-trapped.

Words of compassion were not only received from the governor, but also from President Barack Obama. He stated his sincere sympathy to those involved and issued a plea to the American people to come together during this devastating time.

Norway Attacks Admitted by Anders Behring Breivik

America Stands With You NorwayAmerica Stands With You, Norway

Describing his heinous acts as “gruesome but necessary”, Anders Behring Breivik has admitted to carrying out two attacks in Norway which have shocked the world. Charged with bombing a building in Oslo’s Government quarter, and killing 85 people at a youth camp on the nearby island of Utoeya, Breivik says he acted alone.

The attacks have claimed the lives of at least 93 people, with an additional 96 injured and some still unaccounted for. At least four people from the youth camp are missing; they are feared drowned after swimming into the lake to escape the shooting. In Oslo it is feared that more victims may be found in buildings that are currently too unstable to search.

At a memorial service on Sunday, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said: “Every one of those gone is a tragedy. Together it counts as a national disaster. In the middle of the tragedy, I am proud to live in a country which has managed to stand tall in a critical time. Our response is more democracy, more openness and more humanity, but never naivete.”

Breivik was arrested approximately 90 minutes after the massacre started, surrendering when he ran out of ammunition. Questions have arisen as to why the operation to capture him took so long, with local police opting to wait for a special unit from Oslo to arrive, as their boat was too small to carry equipment and personnel.

Police Chief Sveinung Sponheim said Breivik “admitted to the facts of both the bombing and the shooting, although he’s not admitting criminal guilt. He says that he was alone but the police must verify everything that he said. Some of the witness statements from the island have made us unsure of whether there was one or more shooters.”

An armed raid was carried out in Eastern Oslo, and though several people were detained, they have now been released. Police have said that there is no evidence to connect them to the attacks, and while they are currently not looking for anyone else, they have not ruled out that Breivik could have had help.

Anders Behring Breivik has been charged over both attacks with his first court date set for Monday. Under Norwegian law the maximum time he could face in prison is 21 years.

32 year old Breivik grew up in Oslo and attended the Oslo School of Management. On his Facebook page, he describes himself as a Christian and Conservative.

Hours before the attacks, a 1,500 page ‘manifesto’ entitled ’2080: A European Declaration of Independence’ was published online. This has been attributed to Breivik, posted under the pseudonym of Andrew Berwick.

The manifesto opens with an entry in 2002, in which Breivik claims that he has been “ordinated as the 8th Justiciar Knight for the PCCTS, Knights Templar Europe”, a resistance movement to combat the “Islamisation” of Europe.

The Knights Templar were a medieval Christian organization during the Crusades, and are revered by white supremacists.

The manifesto details several ‘preparation phases’ in the run-up to the attacks. He describes cover up stories for his actions, increasing his fitness level, and acquiring weapons and explosive materials. Breivik writes about creating two businesses: a mining company and a small farm operation.

“The reasoning for this decision is to create a credible cover in case I am arrested in regards to the purchase and smuggling of explosives or components to explosives – fertilizer. In this case I created a new company called Geofarm, which might act as a credible cover for such activities.”

By 2010, he writes about acquiring weapons such as a semi-automatic rifle and Glock pistol legally, as he doesn’t have a criminal record that would prevent him from purchasing a gun. On the application form he states ‘hunting deer’, but comments that “It would have been tempting just to write the truth: ‘executing category A and B cultural Marxists/multiculturalist traitors’ just to see their reaction.”

In the run-up to the attacks, the day to day entries describe his “personal reflections and experiences during several preparation phases”, until the final entry which simply reads:

“I believe this will be my last entry. It is now Fri July 22nd, 12.51.

Sincere regards, Andrew Berwick. Justiciar Knight Commander. Knights Templar Europe. Knights Templar Norway.”

A anti-Muslim video entitled ‘Knights Templar 2083′ appeared briefly on YouTube, showing still pictures of Breivik wearing a wetsuit and holding an automatic weapon.

While police have not speculated on what may have led Breivik to choose his specific targets, the Oslo building is connected to the governing Labour Party, which also runs the youth camp on Utoeya Island. The victims on the island were teenage members of the social democratic Labor Party.

His lawyer, Geir Lippestad, said: “He’s stated that he went to Utoeya to give the Labour party a warning that ‘doomsday would be imminent’ unless the party changed its policies.”

While Norway has dealt with neo-Nazi groups in the past, it was assumed that they were mostly eliminated and didn’t pose a great threat.

The Norwegian attacks have people thinking back, and making comparisons to the Oklahoma bombings in 1995. Just as in that case, the initial assumption that it was a Muslim attack proved to be mistaken. Once again, large quantities of fertilizer were bought with the intention of making bombs, mirroring Timothy McVeigh’s actions.

Brita Skogly Kraglund works for the Vaart Land newspaper, one of the businesses housed in the building. When the bomb blast blew out the windows, she and her colleagues ran out into the street, unhurt but badly shaken.

Her husband, Ivar Dyb Kraglund, a senior researcher at Norway’s Resistance Museum said: “I immediately thought of Oklahoma City.”

On viewing the damage, Sigrid Skeie Tjensvoll said: “If Islamic people do something bad, you think, ‘Oh, it’s Muslims’. But if a white Protestant does something bad, you just think he’s mad. That’s something we need to think about.”

Both McVeigh and Breivik are painted as “domestic terrorists.”

McVeigh didn’t stand out growing up. The son of a factory worker and homemaker, he represented an all-American youth, working at Burger King and as a Security Guard, before joining the military. He was a decorated Army veteran.

Anders Behring Breivik appears to be a typical Norwegian. Blond haired, blue eyed, and a ‘preppy’ dresser, he was a youth and adult member of the conservative FrP, or Progress Party.

Both men shared extreme political agendas.

McVeigh became increasingly disillusioned with the federal government and their treatment of the Iraqi people. This was compounded by the government’s actions at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, and at Randy Weaver’s cabin in Ruby Ridge, Idaho.

Breivik claims to have worked alone, but that has yet to be determined. While McVeigh initially claimed the same thing, an FBI investigation led to Terry Nichols being arrested, charged with helping to build McVeigh’s bomb, and Michael Fortier, accused of failing to alert authorities to the plan.

Needless to say, the jury that convicted Nichols could not agree on a sentence for the defendant, echoing the sentiments of other jurors when she said “I think the government dropped the ball.” Several jurors felt that a number of co-conspirators were not arrested, believing that the FBI had failed to follow up a number of leads. This led to them being unable to convict Nichols of murder.

Kari Watkins, executive director of the Oklahoma National Memorial and Museum, said she has been contacted by survivors and victims’ relatives of the Oklahoma bombing, shaken by what has happened in Norway.

Noting that many are having ‘flashbacks’, she said “It’s a senseless and needless attack. And it’s almost exactly what our people went through. When it’s one of your own, when it’s one of our folks doing it to us, it’s hard to stomach.”

Watkins is not surprised that the Norwegian does not represent what people imagine when they think of a terrorist, saying that the one thing that the Oklahoma City bombing taught her is that “evil doesn’t have to look like a monster.”

FBI Opens Investigation in News Corp

“News Corporation is under investigation by the FBI in New York, due to allegations that journalists tried to obtain the phone records of 9/11 victims.

The inquiry was opened after FBI director Robert Mueller received a letter from Representative Peter King, Rep-NY, demanding an immediate investigation into journalists who worked for The News of the World, a UK tabloid owned by News Corporation. News reports have surfaced that the journalists used bribery and unauthorized wiretapping to attempt to access the phone records of victims of 9/11.

“”We’re aware of certain allegations pertaining to a possible hacking by News Corp, personnel and we’re looking into these charges,”" said Jim Margolin, a spokesman for the New York office of the FBI.

The News of the World is currently under criminal investigation in Britain for hacking the phones of a multitude of people, including the voice mail of 13 year old Milly Dowler, who was kidnapped and murdered in 2002. There are also accusations of bribing police for stories. A number of journalists have been arrested, The News of the World has closed its doors after 168 years in business, and Rupert Murdoch has withdrawn his attempt to take over British Sky Broadcasting.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal (which is owned by News Corp), Murdoch defended his company, saying that they are handling the phone-hacking scandal “”extremely well in every possible way”" with only “”minor mistakes”". He said that an independent committee, led by a “”distinguished non-employee”" would investigate the allegations.

In an article in Monday’s Daily Mirror, a rival tabloid in the UK, it was reported that journalists from The News of the World has been in contact with a New York private investigator and former police officer, offering him money in exchange for 9/11 victims’ phone numbers, and details of any calls made in the days prior to the attacks.

Rep. King wrote “”If these allegations are proven true, the conduct would merit felony charges for attempting to violate various federal statutes related to corruption of public officials and prohibitions against wiretapping. Any person found guilty of this purported conduct should receive the harshest sanctions available under the law.”"

Along with Rep. King, a number of Democratic lawmakers have spoken out, including Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia, and New Jersey Senators Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg.

Murdoch and his son James are scheduled to testify before the UK Parliament next week. Rebekah Brooks, CEO of News International before her sudden resignation today, will also testify.

Details of the inquiry have yet to be disclosed, including those under investigation and specific criminal acts. At this point the FBI is treating the case as an assessment, a step that is taken before possibly issuing subpoenas. It is thought that the inquiry will be overseen by two FBI departments, one focussing on white-collar crime and public corruption, and the other investigating cybercrime.

Relatives of 9/11 victims have spoken out, thankful that the FBI is looking into the matter.

Sally Regenhard, who lost her son, firefighter Christian in the attacks, said: “”I’m very happy. The FBI is being very responsive in acting on our call for a full investigation.”"

New York firefighter Jim McCaffrey, whose brother-in-law Orio Palmer, also a firefighter, died on 9/11, said: “”If these claims are found to be true I think it’ a terrible revelation and very, very upsetting to 9/11 family members.”"

If the FBI investigation determines that the allegations are indeed true, it may prove difficult to move forward with the investigation. A former lawyer for the FBI has noted that there is a five-year statute of limitations when it comes to prosecuting people accused of wiretapping.”

FBI Hacked by Anonymous

FBI Hacked by Anonymous

One of the FBI’s private contractors, IRC Federal, was compromised by a cyber-attack last Friday. The hackers, who call themselves AntiSec gained access to IRC Federal’s servers and, in their own words, œlaid nuclear waste to their systems.Later, they released a portion of the collected data on the popular bittorent site, Pirate Bay. Even though their message was littered with anti-American rhetoric and accused IRC Federal of selling out to the “US Empire,AntiSec later asked for understanding, saying that, we are not your enemy, but your citizens.Unfortunately, this is not the first time an FBI affiliate has been hacked, some might remember the recent attack on InfraGard.

FBI to Target Undocumented Aliens

“The FBI has been identified as a key player in a covert operation to identify undocumented immigrants. In documents obtained from the Obama Administration, the program known as Secure Communities seeks to identify illegal immigrants in American jails across the country. The documents reveal that the program is only a small part of a broader inter-agency operation that obtains personal records of not only incarcerated foreign citizens but incarcerated US citizens.

FBI to Target Undocumented Aliens

Secure Communities is ran through an agency of the Department of Homeland Security and its base of operations is in Florida. The basic premise of the program is to run arrested individuals through a screening process that includes fingerprinting. Law enforcement will run the fingerprints through a Department of Homeland Security Database, if the person has previously been fingerprinted by Immigration than the Immigration and Customs Enforcement requires that they detain the inmate until ICE officials can arrive to question them and ultimately decide what to do with them. The process is only helpful in identifying individuals who have already been classified as illegally in the US but law enforcement officials still hail the program as a step in the right direction. One important problem that the Secure Communities program has overcome is racial profiling.

“”It doesn’t look at the color of your skin,”" Deputy Scott Hassell of Etowa County said in an interview with the Gadsen Times. “”It looks at clear objective data.”"

Regardless of that positive aspect, the program has come under fire recently with the realization of how vast the network is and how easily the information obtained could be used against US citizens. Many states are balking at the idea of instituting it. So far three states: Massachusetts, Illinois, and New York have outright refused to obey the Obama Administrations initiative. They claim that the program is not carrying out its originally stated mission which was to detain the most dangerous criminals. According to the Denver Post two-thirds of the twenty one people detained in Colorado through Secure Communities were not dangerous criminals.

With the documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act that uncovered the FBI’s integral role in the program, the main concern is that the massive data collection will eventually be used for other programs within the Department of Homeland Security. Programs that will threaten the rights of legal citizens and residents of the US.”

FBI Paid Informants Targeted by ATF Gun Investigation

“In what could only be seen as a Keystone Kops moment, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has implicated the FBI and the DEA in congressional testimony about gun trafficking with Mexican drug cartels.

FBI Paid Informants Targeted by ATF Gun Investigation

Kenneth E Melson, ATF acting director, in an interview with the inspector general on July 4, indicated that the target of the ATF operation was a former drug cartel member who had been deported from the US by the DEA. He was also a paid FBI informant, something that the ATF did not know.

Melson also inferred that the ATF was never in the information loop with the FBI and DEA regarding their covert operations with the Mexican drug cartel informant.

A principal effort of the ATF has been to intervene and interdict the gun traffic between the US and Mexico. Yet, according to testimony before the Oversight and Government Reform Committee in June, investigators have been ordered to stand down and permit smugglers to take guns into Mexico.

Only later did it become known that the very individual that the ATF was after was a paid informant for the FBI.

Under the ATF gun trafficking operation, known as Fast and Furious, many guns that were supposed to be tracked by the ATF were found at crime scenes in Mexico and Arizona. A recently captured Mexican gang member asserted that gangs could get any guns they wanted, and that even the US government was selling them.

A number of Congressional members voiced concern about the apparent lack of communication between government agencies and the tacit approval of using tax payer money to pay known international drug and gun smugglers for information. Serious concerns about the entire operation were raised in a letter to Eric Holder, Attorney General and head of the Justice Department, from Sen. Charles Grassley (R- Iowa) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista, San Diego).

The war on drugs and weapons contraband between the US and Mexico starts with a clearly articulated and shared mission by all US government agencies. Given the bickering and accusations between departments, that has yet to happen.”

FBI Surveilance of Ernest Hemingway

FBI Surveilance of Ernest HemingwayAuthor and journalist Ernest Hemingway’s initial complaints and seemingly paranoid behavior surrounding FBI surveillance may have validity after all according to Mr. Hemingway’s longtime friend and playwright Aaoron Edward Hotchner.

In November of 1960, just eight months prior to Hemingway’s suicide, Hotchner and another friend, Duke MacMullen, joined Hemingway in Idaho for a fishing trip.

Hotchner tells of several events in which Hemingway’s behavior reflected his belief that the FBI were actively following and monitoring him.

Hemingway believed not only that his car was bugged in attempts to gather information, but that two FBI agents were digging through his bank accounts, all in an effort to prove that Hemingway was attempting to start a spy network and had connections to Cuba.

Hemingway had been hospitalized for nervousness, depression, and failed suicide attempts and he received electric shock therapy.

His thoughts and beliefs about the FBI surveillance were called delusional, and it was not until a Freedom Of Information Act request revealed that Hemingway was indeed the subject of surveillance as he suspected all along.

Mr. Hotchner states that he regrets not taking Hemingway’s complaints seriously.

FBI Raids LulzSec Members Home

“In the light of recent attacks by hacker groups and major media attention on government secrets being exposed via sites like WikiLeaks, the FBI has began a crackdown across the US. Most recently focusing on Anonymous and its off-shoot, LulzSecurity. Anonymous is no stranger to US law enforcement. Last year the FBI investigated the cyber hacker group for attacks on companies and people related to the movie and entertainment industry. Including an attack on a website operated by Gene Simmons for anti-piracy remarks he made. The investigation resulted in a raid on the home of Mr. Darrin Lantz in April of this year. Court records show that confiscated computer hardware that belonged to Mr. Lantz had attacked a website over 48,000 times in less than an hour.

FBI Raids LulzSec Members Home

The investigation gained momentum as LulzSecurity, or LulzSec, as it is widely known, a group that broke off from Anonymous claimed responsibility in attacks on Sony, the CIA, FBI affiliates, and other organizations. A series of attacks that spanned over a fifty day period, and ended via a twitter announcement on Saturday, June 25th. LulzSec made reference to a crew of six that were disbanding after successfully completing the series of hacks. However, it is widely thought that they disbanded due to the mounting pressure from the growing international investigation.

British authorities have been working with the FBI to take down these two hacker groups, and have so far arrested seven people. One of them being Ryan Cleary, a 19 year old hacker who was a prominent member of both Anonymous and LulzSec. Although LulzSec claims he was only a marginal member of the group, out of the seven arrested, he is the only one who has been charged. The Monday following LulzSec’s twitter announcement, the FBI raided the house of a teenager in Ohio suspected of being affiliated with the group and later that week raided the home of an Iowan female, Laurelai Baily. The information confiscate in these raids coupled with evidence provided by Mr. Cleary has given the FBI an abundance of information about the inner workings of hacker groups and has, at least for now, gained the upper hand.”
